Question Title: Appropriate SVT

Forum: The Heart Forum
Topic: Tachycardia

I would like to know what can cause appropriate SVT. I have read that some
chemical and electrolyte abnormalties and too little or too much of certain minerals can cause this and would like to know what and which ones? What bio-chemical abnormalties can cause this? I am interested in the ways it can be caused by something not being quite right (in balance?) within the body. Also, where can I get tested for this and what type of doctor can do it? Can you recommend specific tests? I don't know what type of SVT I have and would like to find any appropriate causes.

Dear Michelle,

Thank you for your question. The only type of "appropriate SVT' is sinus tachycardia. Sinus tachycardia is defined as a heart rate of greater than 100 beats per minute originating from the sinus node. There are many causes of "appropriate" sinus tachycardia such as exercise, anxiety, panic attacks, fever, infection, dehydration, deconditioning, volume loss due to bleeding or other loss of body fluids, hyperthyroidism, electrolyte abnormalities (low or high sodium, calcium, potassium or magnesium) and other less common conditions.

I hope you find this information useful. Information provided in the heart forum is for general purposes only. Only your physician can provide specific diagnoses and therapies. Please feel free to write back with additional questions.
