I posted to you shortly after my diagnosis of asymmetric Hypertrophy of the Ventricular Septum with hyperdynamic L.V. function. I also had trace MR. My question is after my current echo I was told that I had mild to moderate MR. My septum is still in the 2cm range. I also developed high blood pressure that I take 180 mg of verapamil. I was having severe reactions to heat that seemed to raise my blood pressure even on verapamil. He put me on 20 mg Lasix prn. He also told me to come in every 6 months instead of every year. I guess my question is should I be more concerned or should I just relax and do nothing. I also seem to have pressure in my chest most of the time. I also have hypothyroidism that after 2 years we still can not get under control, so I have gained weight; but am not but about 15 pounds overweight.

Dear Patti

Yes, I would be somewhat concerned. It sounds like your hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is progressing. You probably ought to be followed in an institution that sees this type of patient frequently. That way, if surgery or a catheter-based procedure is needed, the timing can be optimized. Dr Harry Lever is our expert on hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

I hope this has been useful. Feel free to write back with further questions. Good luck.
