My mother is 52 years old and until recently has been in relatively perfect health. Last June she was injured at work and received a blow to the left side of her head. Doctors tell her that she now has fibromyalgia. She has now been told she has temeperal Artitis, where she lost slight vision in her left eye, put in the cardaic unit where her heartbeat became 40 and pausing, with chest pains. They told her the vessesl from the left side of her temple was inflamed and she might have to receive a pacemaker. Is this typical to fibromyalgia.... To recieve heart problems with fibromyalgia? Where can she go for help? It does not seem the doctors here are very sure exactly what is going on with her and the exact facts of fibromyalgia and how to treat it. Thank you for your help ______- Dear Mary, Fibromyalgia is not associated with heart rhythm disturbances such as you describe. Temporal, or Giant Cell Arteritis is a condition of inflammation of the large arteries, sometimes causing visual disturbances. Although the heart can be affected in this condition, it is unusual to develop slow heart rates requiring pacemaker implantation. It is likely that the slow heart rate is not related to these other diagnoses, and possibly occurred as a result of head trauma. Also, depending on the specific abnormality in the heart's rhythm as well as symptoms such as lightheadedness or loss of consciousness, no pacemaker may be necessary. The indications for pacemaker implantation should be discussed carefully with your mother's cardiologist. Information in the Heart Forum is for general purposes.
