Question Title: Went to see the Cardio Man today:MVP

Forum: The Heart Forum
Topic: Mitral Valve

Hi !
I posted a message earlier this week about my palpitations. Well, i finally went to see my Dr. today and he said it might be diagnosis MVP, because he could hear a "noise" when he listened to my heartbeat with the stetosc.
that "doesnt belong there". He said to rule MVP 100% out he wants to do a Stress test and echocardiogramm.

As I mentioned in my earlier message I had all these tests done before in Germany and the doc. there said it was fine, that was in 11/97.... now could the Doc. in Germany have missed the MVP? Or could it have just developed from 11/97 to now?

I am very nervous. If I am diagnosed with MVP what does that mean? The nurse there was talking about a test where they inject some dye or something into the patients but then said the Dr. wasnt gonna do that "yet" with me..... what test is that and would that be dangerous or necessary?

I am very confused, especially since my MD in Germany said" ah....don't worry about the palpitations".

Please give me an anwer.

Thanks
Manuela W.

Dear Manuela,

If your doctor in Germany did an echocardiogram and didn't see anything wrong (such as MVP), then you most likely don't have MVP. Nor is it likely that you have anything else wrong with your heart. There's a remote possibility that the doctor didn't interpret your echocardiogram properly, and missed the diagnosis, but this is not likely. So, you ask, why does your new cardiologist want to do additional tests? Something that needs to be understood is that specialists tend to order tests. After all, you went to the cardiologist to receive a definitive answer regarding your palpitations. One approach is to say, " ah....don't worry about the palpitations", as did your doctor in Germany. This is a reasonable approch, especially since we know that palpitations in the absence of structural heart disease, are benign. However, given your extreme anxiety over this problem, your new cardiologist likely wants to reassure you that everything is all right. For this reason, he has recommended additional testing to evaluate the heart and your exercise capacity.

No, MVP didn't develop since your tests in November. If you'd like to avoid repeated testing, you may wish to request that your German doctor send you the video tape from the echocardiogram in Germany, as well as the full stress test documentation. Your new cardiologist could review this information and likely forego a repetition of these studies.

Manuela, I can't repeat this enough. You must realize that these palipitations, although annoying and upsetting, are not harmful. I am even more confident of this fact given the normal test results that you report from Germany. Take reassurance in this fact.
