Question Title: slow heart rate and weak too

Forum: The Heart Forum
Topic: Heart Disease

Have recently noticed my heart rate going down to around 58/min and feels very
weak. It's hard to find my pulse. When I had BP checked, nurse had a heck of
a time, she said my heartbeat was very "quiet". Then she took my pulse and
it was 60. I understand lower heart rates can be typical in athletic people, and
I wish I could say I'm in that group. But alas, I'm very overweight, and my
heartrate usually is in the 80's while resting. I'm taking Atenolol, but
have been taking it for over a year, and not until about two weeks ago did the
slow heart rate begin.

Any thoughts?

Also, on a separate note, what does "reduced cardiovagal function with
preserved adrenergic function" mean? This was noted on an autonomic test
I had done.

Thanks.

Dear Ellen,

Normal heart rate is between 50 and 90. A resting rate of 60, especially on beta blockers is nothing to be concerned about especially if you are not having any symptoms.

Q: what does "reduced cardiovagal function with preserved adrenergic function" mean?
A: The vagus nerve keeps the heart from going to fast. Adrenergic function makes the heart go faster. Your adrenergic function is normal and your vagus function is slightly reduced by this test. If anything at all you have a predisposition to a faster heart rate and not a slower one!
