Question Title: Could i possibly have mitro valve prolapse?

Forum: The Heart Forum
Topic: Mitral Valve

Can anyone please let me know if the following symptoms could be MVP:

sudden accelerated heartbeat (260 bpm) from no obvious stimulus while
sitting down that lasted for approximately five minutes. this only
happens very occasionally, and sometimes when i bend over and blood
rushes back up. and sometimes i get pains in the lower left side of
my rib cage (just under the pectoral muscle). not a sharp pain more
of a tiredish feeling and a little nagging

regards Grant

Dear Grant

MVP can cause palpitations, but rarely. It is used by doctors and patients to explain palpitations far more often than it should be.

A heart rate of 260 is very concerning, if accurate. This could be potentially life-threatening. You should make sure that you are evaluated by a cardiologist.

I hope this is useful. Feel free to write back. I wish you the best of luck.

If you would like to set up an appointment with one of our cardiologists here at the Cleveland Clinic please feel free to call 1-800-CCF-CARE.
