Question Title: Amiodarone and adverse effects on the thyroid gland

Forum: The Heart Forum
Topic: Cardiomyopathy

I read in one of your response about the adverse effects on the thyroid
gland of Amiodarone. Could you please elaborate on the adverse effects
that it has on the thyroid. I currently take amiodarone and I am trying
to get off of it. I have been able to reduce the dosage to 100mg/day, but
I am hoping to get off of it totally over the next year. Your response was

medication effect on thyroid?" posted by Madelyn on September 17, 1998 at

Dear Rick,

Thank you for your question. As with any medication there are potential side effects of amiodarone. One of these is thyroid hyperactivity. This is generally monitored for by the doctor who prescribed the medication. It is important to not stop taking this on your own but only after discussion with your physician. Hope this helps. Feel free to write back with any additional questions.
