Question Title: mitral valve regurgitation in a heart transplant recipient

Forum: The Heart Forum
Topic: Mitral Valve

Our daughter has been transplanted 8/7/97and doing extremly well, as in no rejection and feeling great. Except for this mild leak that she has had from the start, it has turned to moderate to severe. It has not effected her pumping efficiancy as of yet but afraid eventually it may. She previously had dialated cardiomyopathy with a severly leaking mitral valve and was very sick before getting this heart. When I asked if it could be fixed with surgery my answer was, with the risks involved it may be better to re-transplant???? Yikes I don't want to go there again...has anyone ever had a valve repair or new valve that you know of after being transplanted??? Just what are the risks?? Is it because you don't want to stop the heart again??? Her heart was as they say ishemic for 4 hours and 10 minutes as it came from a distance , Drs. did turn down a few from farther distance but with her condition getting much worse we could not wait. She is 8 years old and Iwill have this long talk with Dr. soon. I would just like to gain a little knowledge in this subject beforehand. THANK YOU SO MUCH:)
Mary

Dear Mary,

I’m not sure what your daughter’s doctor meant when he said a transplant may be less risky. There are some technical problems with valve repair in children. As the heart grows the new valve does not and will require reoperation. Ask him if she is a candidate for valve repair instead of replacement. I hope all turns out well for your daughter.
