Question Title: 11 month old diagnosed with PJRT I need more info

Forum: The Heart Forum
Topic: Tachycardia

My 11 mo old daughter was diagnosed with Permanent Junctional Reciprocating Tachycardia. Her heart has been diagnosed as healthy and she has been on flecainide for 5 days now. Her rate is fluctuating between 150 at rest to 200 when active. Dr. says she is in this 99% of the time. My questions are these, since this type of tachycardia is rare, where can I get more info? Is this a life threatening situation? Since the medicine doesn't seem to be working what other things are available to break the heart rate and keep it down? Our Dr's seem competent, yet I don't have enough information to compare their advice or protocol to. Can you please give more information?
Thanks Adele

Dear Adele, thank you for your question. Your daughter may be a candidate for a procedure called radiofrequency ablation during which catheters are used to apply radio energy to an extra electrical conduction pathway in the heart to eliminate the tachycardia. I don't believe her situation is life-threatening but only her cardiologist can accurately determine that. Dr. Richard Sterba is a pediatric cardiologist here at Cleveland Clinic who specializes in treating tachycardias in children. He would be a good resource for more information and he would be happy to evaluate your daughter for treatment options. You can reach Dr. Sterba at 216-445-5015. Good luck!
