Subject: Re: Ablation for my 8 year old My 8 year old son has been diagnosed with SVT. He is presently taken 50mg Atenolol and .125 Lanoxin in the morning and .0625 Lanoxin at night. He is being seen at Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh and his cardiologist has explained the ablation to us and made an appointment with the specific specialist that does the procedure to educate us. I know Children's is a good hospital,I trust his cardiologist and I have been reading the other posting on this site about the procedure that make it sound rather routine but......Is it any less or more safe on a young child? It's a scary thing for an adult and that much more for a child (And even maybe MORE so for a Mom!) __ Dear Diane, You are in GREAT hands at Children's in Pittsburg, and this is a very safe procedure. It is scary for everyone in the family I am sure, I am sorry that your son has this problem, however I am glad that there is a cure (as opposed to a life of medications) available to him. As for the specific risks for your son, you need to ask his doctors about that (specifically the EP doctor who will perform the procedure.) Most kids can not have this done until their heart reaches a certain size or near adult size because the little burn you make needs to be just that little; if you did this to a 2 year old, as his/her heart grew, the scar from the procedure would also grow. Since your child is 8 years old, you can discuss this point with the EP doctor, but I would think they have already considered this issue. I hope this information is useful.
