Hi. My father in law ( Bud - 65 yrs. old) has been recently diagnosed with CHF. His heart is enlarged with 22% dead muscle. He has been on several drug treatments with not much improvement. He is constantly short of breathe, up to all hours of the night (can't sleep) and has restless legs. He is currently taking 200 mg (?) of laytex (sp?). He recently confurred with a cardiologist based in Mt. Sinid in NYC. That doctor suggested another drug treatment (beta blockers) then looking to heart transplant if no improvement. In researching this on internet, I have heard of the possibility of "remodeling" the heart available at your clinic. I know you don't have alot of information in this letter, but do you think it would be in his interest to come out for an evalution and a consult? To back track a bit, he was born with a heart condition (I believe it was a hole in the heart) and in July 1997, had open heart surgery to correct a leaky mitral valve and the hole in the heart. He initially was doing great. The last 7 months or so have been a steady decline in his physical abilities to the point where he can't walk a "city block" without becoming short of breathe. He is a petite man weighing about 130 lbs. and is 5'5". Thank you.

Dear Michelle

We offer heart remodeling surgery, as well as being the nations leader in heart transplants. In addition to that, we offer advanced and experimental oral and intravenous medications for patients who are interested in these options. It sounds like your father-in-law is in pretty bad shape, so I think he should be evaluated reasonably soon. We would be happy to see him here.

I hope this has been useful. Feel free to write back with further questions. Good luck.

Information provided here is of a general nature. Specific diagnoses and treatments can only be made by your doctor. If you would like to be seen at the Cleveland Clinic, please call 1-800-CCF-CARE for an appointment with a cardiologist.
