Do I need a cardiologist?

by annie, Aug 16, 1999 12:00AM
I am a 34 year old woman with borderline hypothyroidism, I take 50 mg. of Synthroid a day.  I have low blood pressure 85/60, low body temp., 97.0, and a slow heart rate 58-60 beats per minute.  Every day after I eat supper, my heart will race to about 120 beats per minute, and I'll have palpatations.  Some days, my heart will become so slow that it feels like it actually stops beating for a couple of seconds.  Is all this related to the hypothyroidism?  Should I see an endocrinologist or a cardiologist?

Dear Annie,

First you need to see an endocrinologist to correct your hypothyroidism.  These symptoms including your cardiac ones are likely due to abnormalities in thyroid function.

You may wish to see a cardiologist if your symptoms continue despite adequate correction of your thyroid dysfunction.  I hope this has been useful. I wish you the best of luck. Feel free to write back.
