Inappropriate Sinus Tachycardia

by JoyLynn, Aug 30, 1999 12:00AM
I'm a 19 year old female.  My electrophisiologist has informed me that I have IST.  We have ran numerous test and the only conclusion that we've come to is it must be IST (my mother has the same condition or something similar.)  I've just started taking Verapamil 240mg a day.  My questions to you are:

Can I live a normal life with this condition?

If Verapamil works is there a good chance that my body will become immune to the medicine in a couple of years?

Is there a good chance that a pacemaker will come into play? (in the future)

If my husband and I ever decide to have a child will I be considered a very high risk pregnancy?

thanks for answering my quesitons.

Dear Joy Lynn,

ISt if a very common phenomenon which is easily controlled with medication such as verapamil or a beta blokcer and may decrease as you grow older.

You can expect to live a normal lifespan without the need for a pacemaker.

As far as pregnancy, you are not considered high risk with this condition but care should be taken with any medications that you may use during pregnancy.
