Before Surgery

I am scheduled to undergo surgery for replacement of both my mitral and aortic valves at Cleveland Clinic.  I was told I would first have to visit my dentist for some type of all clear note.  1. Should I have my teeth cleaned?  2. Does he have to fix cavities?  3. Should he only have to xray my teeth and indicate that I do not have any signs of abcess?  Bottom line, What exactly am I doing at this dentist's office and why?

Any infected or diseased teeth need to come out. Any major dental work that needs to be done ought to taken care of before you have artificial valves in place. You would not want your new or repaired valves to get infected (this is a major problem when it happens).
