Arrhythmia plus rapid heart rate when excercising

by Bobbie, Sep 13, 1999 12:00AM
I am 34 yr female, thin, excercise 2-3 times/wk, non-smoker, non drinker.  I have had an irregular heartbeat as long as I can remember.  However, when resting my heart rate is normally less than 100 bpm.  However, no matter how great a shape I think I am in (even when I am running 3-5 miles regularly) my heart rate speeds up to 210-230 bpm while doing aerobic excercise.  I have never been diagnosed.  I've always wondered whether something is wrong.  I have never heard of anyone else with this same condition.

I have an 11 yr old son who was diagnosed with supraventricular tachycardia when he was 5.  He had a few episodes around that time but his SVT seemed to dissappear after that.  He has had no recent symptoms of any heart related problems.  However, this week he failed his football physical after a doctor ordered ECG showed a probable left ventricular hypertrophy.  I am concerned and confused.  What I read about left ventricular hypertrophy scares me.  He seems very healthy (very thin) and is very active.  He is scheduled to see a pediatric cardiologist at the end of the month.

I am unsure whether there is a connection between my strange heart rates and beats and what is going on with my son.  Obviously I am very concerned about his condition and the long term health of his heart and mine.

Thank you for any help you can give.

Dear Bobbie,

I suggest that you be fully evaluated by a cardiologist for your symptoms perhaps a stress test would be an easy place to start.

Given your sons history it would be important to rule out familial forms of ventricular hypertrophy.

Many of your questions about your son will be answered by his pediatric cardiologist.
