Arrhythmias and heart failure

by Elizabeth, Sep 25, 1999 12:00AM
I was diagnosed a year ago with chronic PAC's and some PVC's.  I read on the internet recently that irregular heartbeats increase the chances of developing an enlarged heart and eventually heart failure.  Is this true?? I'm concerned because lately it seems I've been feeling my premature heartbeats in my abdomen/stomach region.  In my logic, I'm thinking I have an enlarged heart because I've never felt them so low before.  I'm thinking the chronic PAC's and PVC's have caused my heart to enlarge. Please help.

No, PVCs and PACs do not increase the likelihood of heart failure.  A chronically fast heart (i.e. >140 beats per minute) can lead to heart failure but PVCs and the like do not elevate HR that significantly.
