Supraventricular Tachycardia - Children - Sotalol

My daughter to be who will be 8 years old in November has Supra
Ventricular Tachycardia since the age of 18 months.

She is currently on 80 mg  -  3/4 of a tablet twice daily.
Teagan has  not had an episode for well over 12 months and this dose
seems to suit her well.  Consultants in the past have often asked
whether I think she slowed down by this medication.  Up until now I have
said no, thinking that they mean physically.  She swims, does ballet
and is very active.
The  question I need answered, is whether any studies or information is
known on Sotolal effecting a child's learning capabilities.  Teagan has
great difficulties in Reading and Writing and is slow in completing any
tasks relating to these areas.   We have just had some tests done over
the last week regarding what it is she is having problems with.
Although her I.Q. is above average, she is reading and writing at a six
- 6 and a half age level, which is below average.
Medical conditions were discussed, that it has been  suggested that we
find out as much as possible about the side effects of Sotalol, and
whether it may be contributing to this problem.    Because Teagan has been
on this medication from such a young age, she would be unable to tell us of
any side effects she is having as she knows no different.  Someone
just put on Sotalol could  tell you on any changes they are experiencing.  I hope
that  someone can help shed some light on this subject.
Thanks  Mary-Anne.

Dear Mary Anne,

Sotalol may cause fatigue, slowed thinking and lethargy in adults.  This may also be the case in children, you should discuss this with your physician and only consider medication changes after talking with your internist or cardiologist.

Dear Mary Anne,

Sotolol, as a beta blocker may cause fatigue, lethargy and sometimes mental clouding in adults.  This may be the case in your daughter.  I would discuss this with her cardiologist prior to making any medication changes however.
