Fainting/Black out

by kim, Dec 19, 1999 12:00AM
My husband was driving yesterday afternoon and started to cough hard (he has a cold so it wasn't unusual) and all of a sudden he started going towards the ditch.  His eyes were open but his head dropped forward.  I thought he was choking.  I really didn't know what was happening.  His friend was on the passenger side, thankfully, and took the wheel preventing us from having an accident.  The whole thing took maybe 20 seconds.  My husband looked around and asked what was going on.  Later, he said everything just went black.  When he woke up he was staring at his hands and it felt as if he had been asleep for "half a day."  He said his arms were numb also.  After a couple of minutes he said he was fine and wanted to continue on but he had a headache.

He is 29, 6 ft tall, maybe 230 lbs, but a hard worker and had a physical last year in which everything was fine.  His parents both have medical histories of numerous things and his mother has had fainting episodes.  His father recently had a panic attack from stress (I assume) and I'm afraid he might be going through the same things.  My husband is also not willing to go to the doctor about something so "minor."  What things should I be finding out?  Or am I overreacting?

Thank you for any info you can give.

This is cough syncope.  This is benign and requires no further evaluation assuming that it is clearly related to the cough.

I hope this puts your mind at ease.

My husband has been suffering from chronic cough syncope sinc March 29, 2000.  He has had more than 150 episodes during that time.  He spent a total of 16 days in the hospital and was subjected to virtually every test imaginable, heart, neuro, pulmonary, etc... The only diagnosis they can identify is tracheomalatia and bronchomalatia.  They say the only thing for him to do is to stop coughing.

His greatest efforts and the best cough suppressents have not stopped the coughing.  He has broken ribs on both sides from coughing so it is extremely painful to cough.  At 37 years of age, he is wanting to get well and return to work and life in general.

Because we live in Alaska, we wonder if there are resources from other areas that could help.  Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I am a seventy year old white male who has experienced eight (8)

fainting episodes during the past 45 years 1957, 1976, 1981,  I suffered a concussion in a 1953 automobile accident - hospitalized one day. The first seven incidents were harmless fortunately. The Last, November 22,1999 a fall at home while I was preparing coffee at 6:00 AM,when I passed out and cracked my head wide open. I was hospitalized three days during which the Cardiologists and the Neurologists conducted every conceiveable test - all negative. The fall resulted in neuro surgery February 8, 2000.  A subdural hematoma which produced a volume of 365 ml. Surgey Successful and no permanent damage. I can't seem to get an answer for the fainting episodes. Could Low sodium, low blood sugar, low blood pressure be the cause?? Thanks

I just fainted yesterday! I was in the hangar where airplanes are kept and I just all of a sudden started feeling dizzy. Then i was going to sit down and I found myself on the ground looking at people looking at me! I didn't know what had happened. I have never fainted before in my life

im 16 years old, 5'5, 120 lbs. And I doubt its cause of standing too long cause my legs were constantly moving. Also i dont think it was the heat because i have been under extreme heat before! I was wondering what it was! Can u give me an answer? Could it be stress related?

My husband is 27 years old and 6'3" and weighs 220 pounds.  He exercises regularly and stays in good shape.  A few weeks ago we were sitting down at a function and when we stood up he collapsed with a blank look on his face for about 5 to 10 seconds.  He does not drink alcohol or smoke.  Please shed some light on what this might be related to.  Both of his parents are in good health.

I am doing a project at Uni on roller coasters and I was wondering what causes one to black out, in particular with respect to accelerating/decelerating. Also what is a "red out"? Thanks for any help you can give.
