Anaphylactic Shock

by Leslie, Dec 28, 1999 12:00AM
My mother was in the Hospital in Oct. and had a stent implanted.  However, during the procedure she went into Anaphylactic shock caused by the Iodine Dye used for the procedure (severe allergic reaction).

She is scheduled to have an Upper and Lower GI. (possible Gallbaldder problem being investigated).  My question is, Is there any risk to her when she has Barium in her system for this procedure?  Is there any correlation between someone with an allergic reaction to Iodine Dye and Barium used for this test? Thanks.

There are alternative to iodine containing contrast that can be used.  She also needs to notify the radiologist several days before the procedure so appropriate preparations (i.e. steroid dosing) can be made.
