degeneration of mitral valve

by Kristine Schrader, Dec 29, 1999 12:00AM
what determines the degeneration of the mitral valve in thoose with mvp? can one start off with minimal regurgitation and mild thickening and years lator end up needing valve repair or replacement?  is there any way to know if the mitral valve will get worse over time are there any signs to watch for?

No one really knows.  Regurgitation can progress in some people but it doesn't always.  This is generally why we will follow someone with mvp and regurgitation over time.
