Baby in distress. Doctors perplexed:(

by Cheryl, Oct 16, 2000 12:00AM
My nephew and his wife just had a baby boy. The last month the child was diagnosed with a heartbeat of over 300bpm. With medication they managed to lower it to around 215bpm. They had to take the baby by Caesarian, because heart failure was imminent. The baby was retaining a lot of fluid. The baby's weight was 6lbs1oz at birth. The actual weight was just a little over 4.5lbs. After the delivery they administered the drugs directly to the baby. The heartbeat dropped to around 160. The day after his birth he had three episodes where his heart raced out of control again. He is in the IWK in Halifax at the moment. They were about to send him back to NB to the hospital there a couple of days ago. 5 days old. That same day he had another relapse. They don't know what is wrong or what to do. They have called hospitals in other parts of Canada and in Europe. Please if anyone knows any information that I can pass please let me know. Any help you can give would be deeply appreciated. Thank you so much.

It is really difficult to say anything intelligent from a distance without reviewing the details of this case. It sounds like a serious problem, and the opinion of a pediatric cardiac electrophysiologist should be obtained.
