My wife (45) was just diagnosed with aeortic stenosis.  Is valve replacement the only alternative?

Dear cci,

It would depend on the degree of stenosis.  If the stenosis is severe or if she is having symptoms due to the stenosis then surgery is the best option.  There are some centers that are doing valve repair but this can only be done in a few cases.  If the individual is very old or could not undergo surgery then there is  a balloon surgery that can be done but this is only a temporary (6mo - 1 yr) measure.  If the stenosis is not sever then medications and watchful waiting may be the best option.
