Response from 1/6 Bad Palp. and Preg

I appreciate your last answer, thank you. I spoke to my cardiologist and he said yes I do have SVT. He said it's not the serious kind and not to worry about it. Is that what causes the palp. that cause my face to flush and get hot? It feels like I have different kinds of palp., hard beats, skips, etc, is it the SVT that is causing all of them, or could I have some other type of rhythm problem? Some times I have to wait for what seems like forever, but I know it's only seconds, for my heart to get beating right again. Is there any chance of it not correcting itself with SVT? Since I'm considering another pregnancy, can SVT be affected by that and get worse from all the stress on the heart? I'm not sure whether to tempt another pregnancy or not.

Thanks again, Sue

Dear Sue,

It is likely that the SVT is the cause of the symptoms you have been describing. The SVT may be induced further by the hemodynamic changes that take place during pregnancy. I don't think the SVT is life threatening, it just very bothersome. You should consider being evaluated by an electrophysiologist, which is a cardiologist specializing in rhythm disturbances. You may be a candidate for catheter based treatment of your SVT. I would recommend an appointment with an electrophysiologist at a major University based medical center near you or you could make an appointment with one here at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation (Dr. P. Tchou). Appointments can be made by dialing 1-800-CCF-CARE. You should also  visit our website at www.ccf.org where you can learn more about the procedure and the doctors who perform them.

Thanks for your question,
