Tetralogy of Fallot

by Tabi7886, Apr 15, 2003 12:00AM
I am now learning about Tetralogy of Fallot, due to the fact that my fiance had a child with someone that had this problem.  The doctor told him it was their genetic combination that caused it.  We are desiring to have children in the future, and he is really concerned about this reoccurring? Can you please tell me what the actually chances of this occuring in him having a child with another woman are?  If this is a question that cannot be answered if someone could please point me to a source that may help. Thank you for any advice or information that you can give me.

Dear Tabi 7886,

I hope your fiance's child with Tetralogy of Fallot(TOF) is doing well. Tetralogy of Fallot is estimated to occur in 3.3 per 10,000 live births. In certain cases up to  50% of people with TOF have certain genetic abnormalities which may be transmitted from parents. However, this does not account for all of the cases of TOF and the exact mode of transmission is variable. To obtain an accurate risk of TOF for your situation, you and your fiance would probably have to undergo genetic testing and counseling. The incidence of the disorder in the population is 3.3 in 10,000 births and your risk would likely be higher than this, but without more genetic information on you and your fiance one can not accurately comment further. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your question,
