Accelerated Junctional Rhythm

by Kristin391, Jun 24, 2004 12:00AM
Recently, I was cardioverted from rapid uncontrolled atrial fibrillation.  Now  I am in an accelerated junctional rhythm with no organized atrial rhythm.  My rate is around 70-80.  Can an accelerated junctional rhythm persist or am I likely to revert back to the atrial fibrillation? Can you help me to understand accelerated junctional rhythm?  I always thought it was a rhythm that people had for short periods of time. I am on amiodarone, verapamil and toprol.

krsitin,

thanks for the post.

1) Can an accelerated junctional rhythm persist or am I likely to revert back to the atrial fibrillation?

It can, but persist in some people. You can try different drugs to manage and convert it, as your physicians have done. Sometimes ablation of the junctional focus can be considered in persistant cases.

The normal pacemaker cells of the heart are not working properly for unclear reasons.  The cells in another portion of the heart have taken over this responsibility.

good luck
