IST is a hypersensitivity of the heart to adrenaline. This is a problem with the electrical system of the heart, not heart disease or a structural problem, so IST doesn't show as an abnormality in routine tests. Before a diagnosis of IST is made, other causes of rapid heart rate must be ruled out...like thyroid problems.
Symptoms of IST can include fast resting rate, fatigue, poor sleep quality, sweating with minimal exertion and an overreaction to stress due to increase in adrenaline.
IST is often misdiagnosed by GP’s and even Cardiologists. Because this is a problem with the electrical system of the heart, an Electrophysiologist is your best bet for an accurate diagnosis and treatment. If medication, beta blocker or calcium channel blocker, does not control heart rate a cardiac ablation is often necessary. University medical centers are great for dealing with EP issues.
I was really sick for years and nothing showed on the multitude of tests...except my resting heart rate was always above 100. No Dr paid much attention to my rapid rate, even when resting rate was in the 140's. Don’t let your Dr ignore your heart rate because IST accounted for all my symptoms!
I'm currently on 200 mg of Toprol to reduce my heart rate and sometimes it still races.
Good luck on your search for an answer!
