Ducubitus

by RIO, Oct 18, 1999 12:00AM
Dear Sir,

my mother is a cancer patient currently undergoing quite a lenghty bed rest as there are some metastases in the femur bone s that she cannot walk around almost at all.

During the lengthy bed rest she develops a condition that the doctors call ducubitus (not sure of the spelling), but this is a condition whereby the patient develops a small skin blister in the lower back area because of lengthy period of friction with the 'hard' surface of the bed.

The doctors have supplied her with 'ducubitus' bed, consisting of air mattress which should relief some of the blister formation.

I just want to know a bit more about this condition and how to prevent/treat it.  Look all over in the net but could not find it, perhaps I was looking at the wrong thing since I am not sure how this condition is spelled.

Thanks for your help.

Rio:

The proper name is "decubitus," which is commonly called a bedsore.

One site you might want to look at is the Decubitus Foundation:  www.decubitus.org

Best.
