Growth on top of head.

by C. Meredith, Oct 26, 1999 12:00AM
Dear Dr;

            I am a 43 yr.old B/M, who does have a problem with shaving bumps on my neck area, and the lower back of my head. Recently I discovered an area at the very top of my head, roughly the size of a nickle, which has absolutely no hair growth. I can also feel that in the area where hair is not growing, there is a bump which seems to be just under the skin. There is no pain, but it does itch from time to time. A friend  mentioned something called a WEN, but I can't find any information.

            What is a WEN, and does it seem to fit the symptons I mention above?

Mr. Meredith:

A "wen" is a lay term for a cyst.  While a cyst is a lump, it doesn't cause hair loss.  Perhaps you have a condition called "alopecia areata," in which a spot falls out and grows back a few months later.  Cause is unknown.  You might want to have a doctor check it out, so you can be sure.  I can't think of many serious conditions which could cause your problem.

Best.
