Possible Impatego?

by Mary, Aug 09, 2000 12:00AM
Dear Doctor,

My 6 yr old son had a few water blister type of rashy pimple like blisters around the one side of his butt cheek and on his  upper lip on his face.  The one on his upper lip is  the size of a nickel.  The next day he woke up and the one on his upper lip  colored a bit and is on the yellowing side.  They look like a cluster of little blisters with a redding yellowing color and it itches.  The one on his butt cheek seems to be subsiding as that never formed a patch. I'm thinking the one on his butt cheek may be from  his bathing suit being wet, but am concerned about this one on his upper lip as its  gotten deep looking and almost looks like a scab at this point but is not.  Please, any thoughts you may have would greatly help as we just moved into a new home and are uninsured.

Thank You.

Mary:

The facial spot in particular may be impetigo, a superficial skin infection caused by strep or staph germs.  Tey using over-the-counter bacitracin or neospsorin 2-3 times a day.  If that doesn't work in a week, or it it spreads to your won or others, you'll need to see a doctor, I think.

Best.

Does impatego affects only children?  My mother who is 70 years old have recently been diagnosed with this infection.  She complains of fatigue and itchiness.  Any recommendation for the fatigue and itchiness?

Thank you in advance

Duong
