Fear of cancer. marks that appear and reappear

by e_forward, Mar 26, 2001 12:00AM
A couple of years ago, I noticed a red-brown mark a size of the fist (but more vertical) on my upper left back. I dont know where it came from, but it couldve been the sun. It seemed to heal after a while, but every time after I lift weights, it seems to come back and then slowly disappear after days, fading in a dotted manner. Now my guest is it was probably due to bench pressing, and the edge of the bench may have caused it. The wierd thing is it doesnt happen the right side. Please let me know if it could be melanoma. I heard melanoma is able to return to skin color. Thank you

One thing about skin cancers is that they generally don't go away, even temporarily.  The phenomenon you refer to is called regression, where melanomas get smaller or go away.  This must happen sometimes, but I've never seen it.  I think your spot is much nore likely to be something along the lines of your own guess: intermittent trauma.  Why not do yourself a favor and let somebody look at it when it's there?  Then you won't have to worry anymore.

Best.
