| Kenalog issues 5/22/2003 | . | Prior to a Kenalog injection in spine for pain there were no derm issues. Within 12 hours of injection given on 3/24 there was a visible "rash" that started on both calfs and spread up legs into groin and red welts following the same pattern as the rash and diarrhea. Diarrhea resolved in 3 days. Rash and welts remained. 10 days later on 4/2/03 a second injection of Kenalog. Diarrhea returned within 8 hours. "Rash" visibly spread from legs onto arms and face but not onto torso within 12 hours. "Rash" and welts are painful and feel tight as if skin is being drawn. Welts open and bleed at times from then until now. Diarrhea resolved after 3 days after each injection. Consulted dermatologist who took a biopsy and said welts were disseminated superficial actinic porokeratosis. And that this was due to sun damage and was in no way linked to Kenalog. I would believe in sun damage but these welts and "rashes" could be seen by me and others just erupting on my skin and spreading in the hours immediately after the Kenalog injections. That is not how sun damage usually works. The condition remains and is not resolving except it is not on my face at this time. It is severe and painful and god-awful looking. Also, the biopsy site has not healed and the biopsy was taken on 4/15/03. However, the back pain has stopped. What am I experiencing and what can be done? My primary care and the pain management doc are scratching their heads and the dermatologist says nothing can be done. |
| Derm-M.D.-ASR 5/23/2003 | Kenalog issues | Unfortunaltely, I can't make any sense out of the sequence you describe, esperially in light of the biopsy results. Porokeratosis is a chronic condition, unrelated to Kenalog as the dermatologist said. I know of no rashes from Kenalog, and even if there were, the changes wouldn't persist. Diarrhea doesn't fit either. Kenalog doesn't stay in the body. Welts generally don't "open and bleed" unless you scratch them. Do you?
