Eczema or herpes or Fungus

by dudeman, Jul 16, 2004 12:00AM
I am a male, 25.  For 2 years now I have had redness and itching in my groin where your thigh meets your genital area.  Its on and off, but the area always remains somewhat red.  Sometimes when it gets real bad there might be what look like little tiny cuts there, and then the skin starts to kind of peel. Before I went to the doctor with it I used some moisturizing cream on it and it got even worse. A doctor told me 2 years ago it was a yeast infection.  I used a prescribed cream and the itching went away in a couple of weeks.  When it came back i started using clotrimazole jock itch cream over the counter and it would clear up but some redness always remains.  I also use Gold Bond powder to keep the area dry and it seems to stop the itching too.  I have been diagnosed with seberrheic dermatitis on my face and scalp since I was about 16.  It runs in my family. Is it possible this is seberrheic dermatitis or an eczema?  Could it be herpes?  I have had intercourse with some woman with risky pasts, but I always used a condom, and I have no sores or bumps.  My doctor told it could be Herpes type 1 in the genital area.  Is that true?  I am going to get a herpes test next time it flares up, but what do you think it is and how can I ease it?

Thanks,

Forever red and itching

Itching and redness is often just irritation and chafing.  This seems likely in your case, because it's so chronic and because you didn't respond to clotrimazole, which is an effective anti-yeast cream.  This does not sound anything like herpes.  Please have a dermatologist look at your rash for proper diagnosis.  A mild anti-inflammatory cream should take care of this.

Best.
