The optic nerve may not begin to swell until several days later. It is important to make sure the AION is not caused by giant cell arteritis and this can be ruled out with a blood test. I am sure this was done. If it is not this, there is no treatment accept maintain good blood pressure and blood sugar control if you have problems with either.
