Good morning. I am 30 years old and I have been going for regular eye examinations once a year for the last 2 years. My eyesight has been fine and there have been no problems except that my eyes are a bit more sensitive than normal. Since my last exam, which was in October of 1998, I have noticed there have been floaters appearing in my vision, particularly when I am outside in bright sunshine or working on my computer. The floaters are usually either clear or dark. Along with the floaters, I have had muscle spasms around my eye. I called the opthamologist and he suggested that they were harmless based on the fact that my last 2 exams were perfect. I trust his opinion, but I am curious as to what kind of symptoms warrant further examination. I guess I am a bit anxious about this since my eyes have always been so sensitive.

Shane,

Floaters are very common. They can be associated with changes in the jelly of the eye. Uncommonly, they can be a sign of retinal problems. Given your age and nromal previous eye exams, this is probably less likely. If you notice flashing lights or a black area in your vision, these are also signs of retinal probles and warrent immediate attention. If you had any eye trauma, immediate attention may be needed.

The muscle spasms of the eyelids are fairly common and may be related to stress and caffeine. Sometimes they occur for no reason.

If your symptoms persist, you should see your ophthalmologist for an examiation.
