Lately I've been noticing that things seem out of focus. When I look at something and look away, I still see what I was looking at in shadow. This lasts for more than a second or two. When I am reading, my eyes seem to be going everywhere but where I want to be reading, like they were bouncing back and forth a bit. I saw an opthamologist, but he found nothing. Can stress be causing this or is there another possible explanation? Thanks for the reply.

Robk,

It is reassuring that you have been to an ophthalmologist who said your eyes were normal. It is not uncommon to see afterimages of bright objects. What you describe is a little unusual. The reading problem may be related to stress. I would return to your ophthalmologist if these symptoms persist or worsen.

Sincerely,
