Dear Cataract Specialist,

My surgeon has said that from the A-Scan data he would rather leave me slightly nearsighted because he can put tiny spokes around my cornea(s)to bring me to 20/20. He said that he would rather not leave me slightly farsighted with the needed intraocular lens implants.

If a multifocal lens is distance dominant, does that mean that it would be better to error slightly on the farsighted side? Having never been farsighted, I am slightly confused as to how drastic less than .5 diopters hyperopic is. I would think the function of the multifocal(Array)would let me be able to focus as long as the light was not so bright making the pupil temporarily too small to include the outer ring(s).

I come from a more rural area & non of the area eye surgeons have updated their A-Scan with the Immersion technique yet. They tell me not to be concerned because they have enough data for their CONSTANT so they don't need to use the immersion probe.

very sophisticate dquestions. the immersion technique is more accurate, BUT if a surgeon has alot of experiences with his/her numbers then there should be very little difference except for very short or very long eyes. most cataract surgeons prefer to leave their patients slightly nearsighted if anything. this should work well for the Array lens that it sounds like the surgeon is going to use. those "spokes" are referring to radial keratotomy and can only be used if you are nearsighted. however, most people do these corrections now with the excimer laser and that can be done if you are nearsighted or farsighted. good luck.
