Question Title: Gluten Intolerance

Forum: The Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases Forum
Topic: Gastroenterology - General

After 4 1/2 years of a very unsettled and painful digestive problem,it has finally been decided that my problem is gluten intolerance-only 2 weeks of being on a gluten free diet has certainly made a difference. What I would like to know,is have I done any permanent damage to my intestines, and how long will it take for my digestive system to return to normal? The bloating, wind, pain and mucous have all gone, but I still have very loose stools-will they return to `normal`,if so,how long?
Thanks in advance
Jill

Dear Jill,

Most patients with celiac sprue will have a clinical response within a few weeks. Nevertheless, it takes months or in some cases years before the small intestine reverts back to normal or near normal. The clinical and intestinal response depends upon how strictly you adhere to the gluten-free diet. Persistence or recurrence of symptoms is usually due to incomplete withdrawal of gluten. I hope you find this information helpful. Good luck to you.
