: I have had a problem with gas for 22 years. Recently, I have purchased probiotics (multi-bacteria pills) from the General Nutrition Center. Now when ever I have gas it do not seem to smell as bad and I do not seem to have it as often. I have taken 2 pills a day since 2/4/98. I wonder why everything else I have tried have not worked. And am I going in the right direction. Dear Frank, The second major cause of gas is fermentation of nonabsorbale materials e.g. cabbage or breakdown of lactose by colonic bacteria. I am uncertain why your symptoms should improve by taking this new pill. I can only surmise that you have somehow altered the relative proprtions of bacteria in your colon to reduce the oganisms involved in this bacterial breakdown of nonabsorbed foods. If you are not having any other medical problems there is probably little risk in continuing the probiotic pill.
