As a reult of uncontrolable gerd I had a unsuccessful nesons fonoplication surery in 91 a partial gastrectomy in 95 and a total gastrcome and gall bladder surg in 96.I have sence been bothered with sever upper chest and back pain, weight loss and low energy.Believe I still suffer from esoph spasm which may explain part of the pain but need nutrition help and direction. _____ dear Dave, The stomach serves several roles one of which is a storage reservoir. allowing us to eat larger meals. After gastrectomy, we are limited in the quantity of food that can be eaten at any one tme. As a first step, you should eat smal meals but food should be taken as often as 5 times per day. If there is evidence that you can not maintain yourweight, you may need nutritional supplementation either enteral (e,g, Ensure) or TPN ( receive all nutrition intravenously). Whether you have esphageal spasm can not be determined by history alone. This information is presented for educational purposes only. Always ask specific questions to your personal physician. If you are in the SE MI region, we would be happy to see you in the Division of Gastroenterology of Henry Ford Hospital in DEtroit. You can arrange an appoinment with Dr. Muszkat, one of our experts in nutritional problems, by calling our Physician Referral Line at (800)653-6568. HFHSM.D.-rf
