Question Title: Celiac Disease and Dental Problems

Forum: The Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases Forum
Topic: Gastroenterology - General

Are you aware of any connection between Celiac Disease and Dental
Problems.

Four Years ago I was diagnosed as a Celiac and now have
a Gluten Free Diet. At about the same time I began a series of
Dental Problems. Firstly I had pain in one of my bottom molars,
after a few visits to the dentist it was decided that I should have
the tooth removed. This I did but the pain continued. I was told I had
a dry socket and received treatment for this. The pain continued
The dentist then decided to remove the tooth next to the one I
had already had extracted, believing the pain was coming from there.
I still have the pain. I have had a number of operations to ensure
there is no infection in the Gum, x-rays, tablets for neuralgia etc.
I have now had tooth ache for four years and would like to know if this
could be connected to being a celiac.

Many thanks

FGoy

Dear FGoy,

Most of the clinical symptoms in patients wtih celiac sprue are due to malabsorption and nutrient deficiency. Bone disease such as osteoporosis is fairly common in celiac disease because of vitamin D and calcium deficiency. Part of the bone in teeth is the same type of bone found in the vertebrae and other areas of the body. It is possible that vitamin D and calcium deficiency are causing dental problems. Other nutrient deficiencies may also adversely affect the teeth. Examples include: Protein calorie malnutrition, Vitamin A deficiency, Phospohorus deficiency, Vitamin C deficiency, Fluoride deficiency and Iron deficiency.
You might benefit from a bone and mineral evaluation and vitamin supplementation. I hope you find this information helpful.
