Question Title: PRILOSEC DOSAGE

Forum: The Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases Forum
Topic: Digestive

I WAS RECENTLY PUT ON 60 ML. OF
PRILOSEC FOR GERD. I HAVENT HEARD OF
THIS. I HAVE SEEN WHERE PEOPLE HAVE
BEEN PUT ON 40. I HAVE A SLIDING
HIATAL HERNIA, AND I AM CURIOUS AS TO
HOW HIGH A DR. CAN OR WILL GO WITH THE
PRILOSEC BEFORE OTHER MEASURES ARE
TAKEN. MY DR. ALSO CALLED ME 2 TIMES
TO SEE HOW I AM DOING ON THE MEDS WHICH
MAKES ME WONDER EVEN MORE IF ITS SAFE
TO BE ON THAT MUCH WHEN I WAS ON 20 ML.
FOR 3 YEARS ON 4O ML. FOR ABOUT 2
MONTHS AND NOW 60. COULD YOU TELL ME
WHAT IS USUALLY NEXT WHEN THE PRILOSEC
DOESNT WORK?
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.

Dear Jodi,

In my clinical practice I try to use the lowest dose of omeperazole (Prilosec) possible to control symptoms. On occasion I have recommended 60 mg per day, but that is a high dose. I try to use it for only a short period of time. If 60 mg does not effectively control symptoms, I would consider it a treatment failure and would consider an using another medication, further testing to confirm or exclude acid peptic disorders as the cause of symptoms or consider an alternative diagnosis. I hope you find this information helfpul.
