Question Title: enlarged common bile and elevated liver enzymes following gall bladder removal

Forum: The Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases Forum
Topic: Gallbladders

Labs following AST 207 ALT 330 LDH 981 ALK PHOS 308 GGT 358. The US 1 month before surgery showed common bile duct normal. In my searching the Web I ran across an article on Hemochromatosis and realized that I have had these patchy brownish marks on both forearms for years now, I had some on my chin area that have gone away at this time. What other tests should be done to rule out or confirm Hemochromatosis? With these levels should one rule out PBC, PSC first? What next? I also have been diagnosed as having IgA Nephropathy, not by biopsy but by elimination.
I would appreciate any comments.
Thank You

Dear Selma,
Is your bile duct enlarged because your email provides contradictory information? The liver tests that you provide are not diagnostic. Bile duct blockage as well as hepatocellular disease can cause the elevattions that you describe. To rule out hemochromatosis, it will be necessary to obtain iron studies. Other possible explanations for then increased liver tests include chronic viral hepatitis, autoimmune liver disease, and possibly fatty liver.

This information is presented for educational purposes. Ask specific questions to your personal physician.
