I am a 29 year old male and have been experiencing occasional discharge from my belly button. There is no pain, but it has been happening every 2-4 days for the past month. The discharge is typically a very small amount a brown, redish substance and has a very pungent odor. When I clean the area, the belly button looks fine. No apparent cuts, swelling, etc.

Any thoughts on this strange condition?

Dear Clint:
Thank you for your question regarding umbilical drainage. As pointed out by both Laura and Trisha localized infections can be a source of umblilical drainage (yeast being the most common). I would also alert you to the possibility of an umbilical sinus or fistula. I would have a physician carefully examine the area - preferably when drainage is noted. Sincerely, FWR
