It all started with extreme stomach pain .......

I took my daughter (16 yrs old) to the ER with extreme stomach pains. They did an Ultrasound and said that she showed no signs of gallstones, however the duct leading from the gallbladder looked enlarged, therefore a stone must have past through. They also did a Urinalysis (which to me looked really dark). But they said it was OK. They also did blood work and did not find anything. She continued to have bad stomach pains, so I took her to see our Family Practioner and he ran some more blood work and another Urinalysis. He said it was again dark and showed signs of bile, which he said was evidence of a stone. He also said that one of the Liver Test that was high he said the norm was 0-40 hers was 130 in the ER and 145 at his office. More test where run and he then said her Liver Enzymes which shoud be 0-50 was 281. Now they are running more test. What the heck is going on and isn't there a whole battery of test that can be done at one time, instead of going through these test one by one and having to wait days in between test. She is still in a lot of pain in her upper abdomen and complains more about the pain in her upper back area getting worse. She has been nauseous and has been having diarrhea. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Donna,

You are correct that a battery of tests done at one time makes sense. The issue for your daughter is the cause of elevated liver tests. It is imperative to exclude gallstones because this problem requires a specific surgical treatment. The other possible explanation for your daughters problem is hepatitis. Usually viral hepatitis is found (A, B, or C) but sometimes, autoimmune hepatitis or metabolic liver diseases are identified. I think that you should talk with your doctor and share your concerns.

your daughter has gallstones it sounds like to me. or a dead gallbladder.

I have been having abdominal pains for years. I was diagnosed for "Reflux" in the mid 1980s'. The pain was so severe in September that a battery of tests were given. My problem was found with a "gastric emptying" test. After eating 2 radioacitve eggs I was placed under a Gamma ray machine which tracked how well food passed through my stomach. It was found that I have significant loss of the ability to pass food. The long time it takes produces more acid and is very painful. The doctor has prescribed "cisapride" it is too soon to see if it works. Good luck

I've just had a hep-bilary exam done, and it came back showing my gallbladder was not emptying enough,(should empty at 35%, mine was 10%). They have suggested removal of my gallbladder. My pain is on the middle-right side that will also go to my middle back, usually after 30 or 45 min. of eating a meal containing fat, the pain is terrible, my only confort is knowing after about 1 or 2 hours the pain will go away. I feel that it is my gallbladder. My research has lead me to understand that pain in that area can be associated with alot of different things, and yes you have to do a lot of tests, but see a gastroentolgist, and get your daughter to throughly explain to you how it feels when she has this pain and what has she been doing or eating the few hours before the pain occurs.

Hi all. For the last few weeks I have been un-able to eat normally. If my stomach is full, I throw up like burping all my food up. Last week I started waking up about 3-4am with my stomach severely burning and I felt my heart racing and I was sweaty, it was scarey. Yesterday afternoon I had severe sharp pain below my right shoulder area, it lasted most of the day. Anybody have any ideas what it could be? I have an ultra sound scheduled for Monday.

I took my husband to the ER with flu symptoms, nausea, extreme abdominal pain and slight fever. After exrays it was determined that he had a bowel obstruction. They pumped his stomach and admitted him to the hospital. After 5 days of exrays and CT scans only to reveal that the berrium has not passed through his system. He was released after 5 days with a clean bill of health. He is still having pain in the right upper abdomin and upper right back and stomach is still distended. He has intermitent chills then fever for a while, then he seems fine for a few hours. He refuses to return to the ER for additional workups. What could a possible cause be and where should we go from here?

A friend of mine has been diagnosed with Hep. C, and needs a liver transplant

I would like to read about it, and learn more about his situation.

I heard he need a liver transplant. I would also like to learn about that also.
