Blastocystis Hominis

I have a 6 year old boy who for the past two months has had sometimes visable blood in the stool foul smelling stool and gas, loss of appitite some vomiting and weight loss he has a ced rate of 22 he also has a past history of polyps which were removed with a colonoscpy one was 4.by 2.5 (large) less than a year ago . After many blood and stool tests they have come up with Blastocystis Hominis and are treating him with flagyl which is making him sick and after being on this for three days the symptoms have seemed to worsen( thru the entire sickness he has had occult blood in the stool) this 6 year old now weighs 48lbs and has dark circles under his eyes and his lower eye lid is red rimmed he also is very pale and feels exxxtremley weak after small bowel movements in which the stool is formed but upon touching ( for stool samples) falls apart. The stool is sometimes black and pudding like and smells terribly ---- Now doctors have taken him off the flagyl and want to wait a week then test the stool again to see if blood still exists ( only one lab came back with b hominis and it was sent to several) if it does they would like to do another colonoscpy . But doctor tells me very unlikly anything becase he had a full colonoscpy less than a year ago . PLEASE help i am watching this little boy get sicker and sicker he has gained a pound and a half because of ice cream and instant breakfast so he will eat but I am scared I also have 3 other children who present no symptoms HELP.

In response to Coleen and everyone else who has been looking for alternatives.  I have been taking the Awareness Corporation herbal remedies (Clear, Experience and Harmony) to clear the gut of parasites, strengthen the immune system and move my bowels faster so that pollups, constipation, hybernation cannot occur amongst any parasite colonies.  It removes absolutely everything but be warned, candida and protozoan are the last things to go.  The longer you've had it the longer the treatment takes - it seems.  I highly recommend it.  Although it is extremely pricey.  Look up Suzanne Betts who is a distributor.  They are lovely warm people, who are very knowledgeable about the products and parasites.  Within two weeks my energy and focus returned.  I started to have normal periods.  The irritable bowel has subsided and I feel human again.  It is advisable to treat the whole family for parasites with the products as well as pets!  You can listen to their educational tapes via the internet on the either on the Betts site or the Awareness Corporation site. It is endorsed by heaps of GP's and medical doctors. www.awarecorp.com
Coleen, it sounds like your son has a very severe parasite infestation.  However, conventional medicine yields more questions than answers on this subject. It is wise to consult GP's with an interest in holistic practice.

Please get him off ice cream!
Milk products and sugar are not helping.
Yoghurt is ok, though.
Also, limit grain products (bread etc) as
Blastocystis Hominis likes grain.

For Colleen with 6 year old boy.

This is a long time since Collen's last comment, so I hope things have improved.  However, if her boy has been flooded with antibiotics, she may consider having him tested for Candida Albicans/yeast overgrowth.  This would certainly make his condition worse, creating a very unfriendly environment in his gut(intestines).  If he is weak already, the yeast is opportunistic and may proliferate.  In which case feeding your boy ice-cream and anything dairy or sugary is not advised.  (Dairy provides good breeding ground for stomach bugs).  Natural, live yoghurt is the exception to dairy.

His gut needs to be healed and strengthened, and seeing a good naturopath or complimentary practitioner is essential.  Diet will play a big part in his recovery, don't try to do it yourself though.

Don't be fooled into thinking yeast overgrowth is harmless, it plays havoc with peoples bodies.  Anyway, do test for it, and if he's clear all the better.  Good luck.

P.S. Bugs and yeast in the gut are great partners in crime.

If you are still looking for some kind of a response: Flagyl is a drug often over-looked in terms of the side-effects.  I am not sure what dosage your son was given, but it can cause serious harm.  Exploration of any lingering side effects would be prudent.  Also flaygl causes serious yeast overgrowth, an organism that lives in conjunction with blastocystis.  I would strongly recommend an herbal cleanse or even better a colonic with a licensed professional.

I have been diagnosed with bh and giardia at the same time.  This is the second time I've had giardia in 5 months.  The dr.
prescribed 750 mg of Flagyl 3 times a day for 7 days.  I am breastfeeding a 6 month old and the maximum safe dosage is 500 mg
3 times a day.  I am 34 years old and have had 4 babies in 7
years. My immune system is weak and made me susceptible to parasites...i do not want to wean my daughter.  My question is
Is there something safe and effective to rid the body of parasites while breastfeeding or is it difficult enough to rid
the body of them even when not breastfeeding?  Is Flagyl effective even at maximum amounts? My thanks and God's blessings to anyone who might help!

THANK YOU for the information!  I have been sick for a year without any of the many tests or doctors being able to diagnose the problem until an alternative M.D. got me to do a Comprehensive Stool Analysis and sent it to the Great Smokies DIagnostic Laboratory; the test showed the BH.  In my experience going completely off of wheat, barley and all other grains (even barley malt in cereal is a problem so I'm on a gluten free diet) eliminated almost all of the GI tract problems.  THe other thing that helped was to get weekly I.V.s of magnesium, other minerals and B vitamins, which built me back up so I felt much better, but I sank back down after stopping them (presumably because of the malabsorption problem).  I just wish I'd done the Stool Analysis test last winter when it was first suggested (it's pricey, so I delayed).

I am a new foster parent of a 2.5 year old boy that after being placed with him for 3 months had his stool checked and the first time it came back fine now the second one came back "a trichome with a few blastocystis". The dr. prescribed flagle.  Should I be seriously concerned? He didn't seem to be. Anything I can do to help him? Diet, etc.?          Thankyou

Thank you so much for all your posts.  Such a relief to know that I am not a 'hyperchondriac'.  It took me two years to convince my
GP in the UK that I was not suffering from depression and do not need 'anger management therapy'- although it helped!  The Hospital for Tropical Disease diagnosed me with BH after several stool samples from other hospitals came back negative.  I have tried elimination diets, anti-candida diets, colonics, urine therapy, wormwood, new wormwood, pricly ash bark, bismuth salts and antibiotics, anti-inflammatories - to no avail.  My symptoms are bloating, mood swings, chronic fatigue, irritable bowel, to name a few.  I think antibiotics were most affective for a week or so then symptoms returned.  Colonics with my own urine took away the bloating but the pain around my illeocal valve of my intenstine was unbearable.  I could feel them swilling around in there.

There have been points where I have just felt like ending it all, the depressions can get real bad.  Thank you for the info on grains.  Explains why I have a compulsive addiction to chicken fried rice!  Have been told that it can be found in sausages and to avoid unpeeled fruits and salads.

Would love to hear from people who have cured themselves in some way.

Many, many thanks.  Where there is hope there is a way.

I have been sick almost 4 years...had previous stool sample for guardia, but was negative.  Also was diagnosed with bladder cancer and had that removed.  Ditropan for bladder spasms did help the intestinal cramping some, but only for a short while.  The diarrhea, abdominal cramping and weight loss continued.  I always get nausea right before the abdominal cramping and had severe pain in the upper, mid stomach region.  After many test I was diagnosed with small intestinal strictures and inflammation of the esophagus and small bowel, with lesions...which have been biopsied (results not back yet).  One week ago I was put on Prevacid for the inflammation.  This time the stool samples came back positive for Blastocystis h.  My doctor advised that this can stay in the body for days, weeks, months or years and is very difficult to get rid of.  Upon my own research, I found that Flagyl is the drug of usual treatment, but that Metronidazole or iodoquinol are much more effective.  Several years ago the CDC in Atlanta, Georgia "reclassified this organism as a dangerous disease-producing organism, as opposed to just a harmless organism.  It is also classified as a pathogen from the Protozoan.  Also, my research found that most patients cannot tolerate grain products as this organism especially likes grain products.  It hides itself in the intestinal mucus, sticks and holds on to the intestinal membranes.  It is known as an organism waiting for a disease, as it attacks more when the immune system is down.  I am currently waiting on my next doctors appointment to know what is my next step.  I can truly understand anyone with this problem and I wish each and everyone of you the very best...just don't give up!

Jimmy,

I only know what I have read in medical texts (I am not a doctor).  What I read is that Flagyl is not 100% effective (one text said 90% effective).

I have some of the same symptoms and my GI specialist said I was a "textbook" case of someone with an upper GI parasite and she suspected BH.  My stool sample came back negative but she wasn't concerned because she said it was a difficult bug to detect.  I tried Flagyl and thought I was cured after about 3 pills.  Then about a week after I finished the course, the problems came back.  Two more courses of Flagyl didn't help at all.  I've since had a colonoscopy and upper GI barium Xray with negative results.  Now still suffering and confused.
Has anyone reading heard of BH being resistant to Flagyl??

Collen, Having had Blastocystis Hominis for about a year, I will say one thing...it got much worse by ingesting things with sugar in them.  Terribly worse.  It's like the little bugs had a party when I had something with sugar in it.  It is incredibly painful.  Another person I know with BH had a similar reaction when ingesting sugar.  Simple, cooked foods were the best for me.  My naturopath also had me taking extra vitamins, which I think was very helpful as tests results showed that my absorption levels where very low.

The product Paraguard (a product that a naturopath provided for me) helped me tremendously to reduce the symptoms and get my strength back. I got incredibly weak.  I could easily run 5 miles before BH and got to the point where I could barely walk a third of a mile.  I do not think that the paraguard gets rid of the BH, but I was able to regain strength and function once again.

Gary, if you know of any research on BH or any remedies that can get rid of BH, I'd appreciate it.  I had a terrible reaction to Flagel.  And as I said, the Paraguard helps subdue the symptoms, but doesn't seem to get rid of the BH.

Thanks.
