Fasting from all food for 40 days

by D. Beamish, Apr 07, 2000 12:00AM
On a long fast (over 10 days)could you explain how the body gets it energy?  One 'authority' on fasting for health purposes claims that the body first begins to use muscle cells in an effort to

save its fat cells but then after a short period, switches to burning fat?

Is it also true that we never could get rid of the number of fat cells but are only able to shrink them with exercise and diet.

Please recommend any good books

Thank you

On long fasts, your body does  get energy from buring fat - when burning this fat, the by-products of the breakdown are ketones - a form of acetone (think about it - acetone is what you will find as a main ingredient in nail polish remover).  For most people, a degree of ketosis (the state your body is in when burning fat) is not too harmful - however, it can become really dangerous - especially with a total fast.  Ketosis if a form of acidosis - an acid like state of your blood. It has many affects on all of your body systems - your kidneys, your brain (it can make you get very dilirious, and even unconscious), and even your lungs who attempt to compensate for this overwhelming state of acidosis in your body.  Ketosis is what diabetics get when they aren't taking enough insulin - it is very dangerous if left untreated.   You should consider another way of losing the weight. There are much safer ways.

Thank you so much for your answer.

I was more concerned about a spiritual fast than a weight loss

one.

Hello. This is a very useful forum.

I also am fasting, although really a liquid diet (fresh vegetable juices in the am, supplemented by SPIRULINA and various herbal and protein powders, made primarily of soybean).

I am on a liquid diet primarily to lose weight since I am too lazy to exercise and find moderation more difficult than abstinence. In my youth I used to fast on water 24-36 hours a week regularly. A year ago I tried a straight spirulina fast and I got 'high' after 3 days. Not my goal.

I expect to do calesthenics once I am down to what was my normal weight when I was 25 (I am now 43).

This liquid diet is totally unlike a water or straight spirulina fast since I am daily taking 1-2 litres of juice (carrot, beet, dandelion greens, celery, green peppers, sweet potato etc).

I HAVE A SYMPTOM. Has anyone else experienced the same or have any interpretation for it? As soon as I am in a city where I can afford a check-up I will get one.

I have been on this diet for a few weeks. I am not fatigued. I have no hunger. A few times a week I have a light meal of grains and seaweed. The reason I do so is for the pleasure of sensory enjoyment of food and to be social with friends. But lately I have added a third more important reason...

I have an ache on my left side, under my ribs, it starts at half way around the front but I feel it at the back, 3/4 the way around also later. It is never in the middle near my spine. It is a dull, annoying ache, say only two on the scale from minor irritation to think I'm going to die. Drinking more liquids, or even plain water does not subdue it. Only eating a substantial meal does.

I get this pain every day. I am speculating that...

1. I am allergic to spirulina

2. That product is adulterated (from the packer or my kitchen)

3. I have a problem with my pancreas or other organ/gland there.

I have reasearched the net and found no possible cause so far.

The only temporary solution besides eating a full mealis to pull up my upper body and arching right as if doing a yoga exercise. This helps for a few seconds only.
