excessive flatulence

by ihateuc, Apr 13, 2000 12:00AM
in 1996, i was diagnosed as having ulcerative proctitis/ulcerative colitis. the doctor tooks several samples of the large intestine, and sent it on for testing. aside from inflammation (gas, muscus discharge during a bowel movement, light red blood on the bowel), it seemed like a pretty straightforward case.

i was treated, and the symptoms went away. in 1998, i had the same symptoms and knew immediately what was going on. i went for treatment to a naval facility and had a full-blown colonoscopy, which revealed what looked like blisters on the lining of the large intestine. i was treated with pretty much the same course of medicine (sulfasalazine, and some other stuff), and again, the symptoms went away.

in february, 2000, the third bout came back. i think i may have been a little preemptive, given my past history, and i went to the doctor before full-fledged symptoms came about. i did see the blood, and a little mucus, so it seemed natural to conclude that what i had was a recurrence of uclerative colitis. this treatment, however, differed from the others. the gi doctor, without ordering a flexsig or colonoscopy, simply gave me medication and told me to be on my way. the symptoms subsided and went away, but now, two months later, i have a dilemma:

i have excessive gas and my stool does not seem to be "normal" as it was before. it is much darker in texture. the gas i am experiencing has been consistent for almost the last two weeks, sometimes causing me discomfort. i don't think this is diet-related, as i've pretty much been eating the same things for some time now. i'm trying to avoid caffeine and carbonated products.

i'd like to know what a reasonable course of action is given these facts. i'm 28 years old, i keep in shape, but i've been unable to contain these bouts of ulcerative colitis.

thanks for the advice.

Dear Ihateuc:

If you'd like to e-mail me I may be able to help you feel better with some natural herbal remedies, and, I can pretty much guarantee you, your problems are likely almost totally diet-related.

Let me know if I can help.

Sincerely,

Wendell  <***@****>

Have you considered that you may have a severe acid condition? Do you get alot of dairy? Milk + Acid = gas. Painful or slow bowel movements can be a symptom of an acid condition. Does a Pepsid help bowel movements or relieve symptoms? Suspect diet. Caffeine, chocolate, greasy-fatty foods are no-nos. Fiber can help many people.  If you need to cut back on the milk, make sure you take calcium.

My doctor diagnosed a gall bladder problem.

My gall bladder pain has always been in-between my shoulder blades in my back and a little in my abdomen. I assumed that I had passsed a stone into the bile duct causing excrutiating pain, like a chronic bout of indegistion whereby I found it hard to breathe. After this bout, the pain settled into a regular early morning pain, until it got bad and I was taken into hospital as an emergency. The gall bladder was removed by laparoscopy just over two weeks ago.

Since discharge from hospital, a couple of days later a similar pain has recurred in the same place in the early morning, and can niggle during the day, although not excrutiating pain. In addition, excessive flatulence, a bit of reflux, some indigestion, and wind in stools. I have notified a doctor and they think things will take tim,e to settle. I am not yellow, and I am not running a temperature. I feel fine in myself.

I am assuming that all of this is early days and post operative pain (which is not excessive). Should I be worried? Please advise what I should do.

I have frequent foul smelling gas on a frequent and daily basis.  I also feel abdominal cramps in the lower part of my abdomen which leads to what feels like a big gas ball in the middle of my stomach which hurts.  Also throughout the day I will feel gas bubbles in my stomach. I am prone to vommiting a little, without provoction - a little vomit will come into my mouth.  More than others I am prone to have diarrhea and usually will find traces of urine in my underwear.  I am a vegetarian, but eat chicken and seafood.  I eat pretty healthy and have a pretty good body, but even though I am in shape I still have a flabby lower stomach, I think this has to do with a gastrointestinal infection.  Does it?
