ERCP.....help!

by TazLady, Jun 13, 2001 12:00AM
Hi,

I am scheduled to have an ERCP with sphincter of oddi monometry in 1 week and I am scared.  I don't know whast to expect as in how much I feel feeel afterward or long it will take to recooperate from this surgery.  Ok, they call it a preceedure, but anywhere they have to cut you, even if it is down your throat, is surgery to me.  Can someone who has had this done PLEASE tell me what to expect.

Thanks in advance.

Well, I could give you any information you might want...I have had 7 ERCPs in the last year with 3 sphincterotomies...the last one was just last week. I can tell you that it is not as bad as it seems. I think the anticipation is always the worst. First of all, you will be asleep for the procedure  so you won't know anything until the end. Sometimes you wake up just fine and go home and other times you could have a little more trouble where you might be nauseated or have pain from pancreatitis. I have had pancreatitis every time and usually end up in the hospital for 1-4 days. But, in the hospital they can control your pain and nausea with medications so it is better that going home.

Why do you have to have the sphincterotomy? I have sphincter of oddi disease. I would be interested in hearing your story. Please feel free to email me at ***@****. Love to help more if I can.
