Fatty Infiltrates of the Liver in obese woman.

by Miss, Sep 06, 2001 12:00AM
I have been alerted to the fact that my liver has fatty infiltrates.  I do not drink, but take a lot of prescription medicines for epilepsy (Dilantin and Keppra), high blood pressure (Atenolol and Norvasc), and some other drugs for depression.

I weigh 254 and am 5'0".  For sure, I thought the fatty infiltrate issue would have been a result of my anti-seizure meds since I am on huge doses, Keppra, 5,250 mgs./a day, and Dilantin, 560 mgs./a day.

Since my epileptologist, Dr. William Rosenfeld, discovered this disease, all I have been told is to "watch what I eat."  This seems far too simplistic to me, and I would like more information.  Unfortunately, I cannot get more info from either neurologist or my primary care doc.

Since I am on Medicaid, I have, needless to say, been treated in the past as a not very important issue, and the sooner one is done with me the better.  That is why I am here.

Please assist me in the path I need follow.  I want to take good care of myself, especially at this weight, and with all these medicines.  I AM cutting back on my dietary intake, and plan on slowly losing the weight.

Since my ultrasound showed fatty infiltrates, should there be any other tests I need have done?  Should I see a specialist?  Would taking more medicine help?  What is the outcome of this condition?  I WAS told a good amount of the liver was covered with fatty infiltrates, and that the spleen, gallbladder, and kidneys were unremarkable.

BTW, I have, after eating, had diarreha immediately.  Does this connect to this type of disease?

Thank you.

Melissa I do not know if you are still tracking this post but I will make a comment or two anyway.  I have been studying the fatty liver issue for a few days.  These web sites may help you understand the issues surrounding it.

I think the reason that no one seems to be paying attention to the issue in your case is that it is not normally diagnosed as a liver disease.  It can be corrected with proper diet and weight loss.  The liver fortunately is a regenerative organ which means, so I am told, that it will replenish itself over a period of time.  On the flip side of that same coin though if left uncorrected your fatty liver will most likely develop into liver desease of some sort.  (I'm not sure which one or how long this may take, I am just relaying what I have read and heard.)

It sounds like you are doing the right things, and I hope your condition improves quickly.  God bless

I am 33yrs old and have been told that i have a fatty liver &

enlarged spleen. my fam. doc. told me that i have to lose weight

or it could turn to liver cirrosis.  I'm 5'2 and abt.175lbs. He didn't seem too worried and that i have to re-take the liver

ultrasound in 6mths. (which will be in march 2002). i took tyl.

#1/2/3 for 2yrs.(95'/96') and have since stopped. I am on antidepressants (Zoloft-three yrs. now) due to anxiety attacks.

I removed my gallbladder 4 yrs. ago.I have had cuts that don't

heal (my skin stays brown on the wound) I also have Thalassimia

a herredidty condition. I don't drink/smoke. And lately I have

have been feeling nausiated for no reason.

My question is should I be very worried abt. the possible outcome? Is there anyone who is going thru this? What are your thoughts? I have two younge children 11&6 and want to be there for them  for a long time. Your comments would be very much

appreiciated.
