cascade stomach and atrial fibrilation

by willem, Nov 30, 2001 12:00AM
Hi,

I know atrial fibrilation is a heart condition but i had to choose which forum to post in.

I was diagnosed with a 'cascade stomach' and i also have been diagnosed with Atrial Fibrilation(they thought it was SVT at first).

For me the two seem very much related.

When i go into Afib it is usually while bending over, crouching and other movements involving the diaphragm like laying down on my back and relaxing the diaphragm area very fast.

I know i'm close to an Afib run when my stomach is acting up, symptoms like bloating, lots of gas, a very tight feeling in the upper stomach area, are usually a good indicator that i have to be carefull with how i move if i want to prevent going into

Afib. When in Afib my hearrate can be 240+, it can last for a few minutes  to a few hours and they scare my quite a lot.

Otherwise my heart is anatomically healthy and i don't suffer from irregular beats or other symptoms except when in Afib.

Now my doctor didn't explain in detail what a cascade stomach is but when searching  for it on the the web i came across this:

The most common cause of cascade stomach. /Sirakov

Other aut.: Stefanov, R., Shipkov, Ch, The analysis of the results showed the leading cause of this condition to be adhesion of the front  costal diaphragm sinus.

**

My two questions are:

-In my case is it likely the Afib runs are caused by the cascade stomach?

-Is there some way to get cured from a cascade stomach? like an operation

and if so is that major surgery or would it be relatively "simple"?

Many thanks and regards

Willem

I would really like to talk with you whether by phone or by email. It can be my dime. You are the first person EVER I have found on a message board with a problem so close to mine. I cannot tell you how comforting it was to find your posting. I must have spent many hours and hundreds of postings searching desperately for someone with a problem even remotely similar to mine.

For years ( I'm 33 Now ), I have had the same problem you have. When my stomach is full whether food or gas, I can go into tachicardia or as you put it, Fibrilation. It is a very scary thing. Over the years, I have seen many doctors about my heart and it always checks out just fine. I've tried to explain to many many doctors that when I eat, it feels like I get this knot in my stomach and then the acid and one wrong move and the 300 beats per minute start. After years of this, I gradually started to eat less and less out of fear of an "ATTACK". I weighed 160 when it all started. I now weigh 119lbs. I can only eat small portions (very small), so that the tachicardia does not occur. It is very frightening. I started having panic attacks shortly after all this started. I didnt even know what a panic attack was, and unfortunately, neither did my doctor(s).

I had to be put on xanax (a mild sedative), because of the panic attacks caused by the stomach/heart problem. I am not a suicidal type personality, but I can tell you that I would rather just go on that to have to live this way the rest of my life. I can hardly eat anything now. I am having to drink Ensure Plus, and I even regurgitate most of that. Once I feel the pressure in my stomach, I do everything I possibly can to belch or throw up or anything that will relieve the pressure because I know that if I dont relieve it, along will come the tachicardia. I could go on forever, but I wont. I would really like to speak with you on the phone sone time if you dont mind. I am not happy that you suffer, but I am happy to know that I am not alone with this problem. Please let me know how I can reach you, if you don't mind.

God bless you,

I have A Fib too. I always tell my wife that it feels like it is more of a stomach problem. It often happens after drinking alchohol (the next morning) . The cardiac specialist said that he thought I had Holiday Heart syndrom. I believe that it stems from my stomach. If I happen to overinduldge I feel like vomiting, if I brush my teeth , eat too much, drink too much , gag or if I do vomit I am done! The  A Fib starts and usaully lasts about 10-15 minutes. But that time is hell , I get scared, sweat panic etc. I try to avoid over eating, drinking etc. I also wanted to find more info on "Holiday Heart Syndrom" as well. My Afib has no real answer a I am 33 years old and the Cardiologist could not find any underlying heart condition. Thanks. email  ***@****

My SVT happens when I overeat too. When I had my first "attack" last year I also had a fever and flu, but after I got out of the hospital for my heart, I noticed I could not eat much at all or my chest pains would start. I lost 30 pounds very quickly, I was overweight to begin with, I continued to lose weight all last year as I no longer overeat. I'm now normal weight but still get the heart symptoms so I avoid a full stomach. Cardizem helps the tachycardia and angina.
